View Full Version : The Big eye thing

I don't really think that its the whole big eye thing that makes another person attractive, it could be something that is rare, you don't see everyday, or your just looking for the qualities that you wish you'd had (wich is creepy either way).

Or it could be that they're narcissits (bad sp) and they like to see themselves in other people's eyes.

I think it's more that big eyes are a rarity in Asia, so they look exotic and attractive.

Kinda like a black man with white skin? 'Cuz I still have no idea why people love MJ, music good, MJ bad.

I always thought big eyes had an impression of being awake and energetic... and young. When you have slit eyes.... it looks like you haven't gotten enough sleep.

It is because large doe eyes are associated with babies. Babies are generally thought of as being cute and delicate, traits desirable in a women. Big eyes are also none threatening. Look at the eys of predators. They are slanted and thin with a sharpness to them. Large eyes are passive and non-threatening.

It's all coming from a different perspective, bigger eyes are desired because they are rarer, and the entire world is turning to a more Western version of idealized beauty. I know some people suffering from the 'yellow fever' tend to go for the more stereotypical looking Asian girls than I would.

That said, many Asian women look at white women and say they wish they had a bigger nose. Well, white women with big noses wish their noses were smaller. You always want what you can't have.

Japanese asked me to do this a lot.

Extend your index finger.
Point it straight up to the ceiling.
Place it on your face in front of your eye. (index still pointing up and the tip of the finger should be resting on your forehead while the rest of your hand lies on your cheek)
Does your eye touch your finger?
For most Japanese, the answer is yes.
I gues it is cool or something if your finger doesn't touch your eye, meaning you are a member of the supreme Aryan race and everything about you is something worth idolizing (joke). I think some kids seriously wanted my eyes. I was surprised that they would even think of something like that.

The most common form of cosmetic eye surgery I believe is called blepharoplasty. While this procedure was created to fix sagging eyelids (a common side effect of old age), there is something apparently called asian blepharoplasty, which is designed to add the look of that crease in the eyelid that at least gives the impression of larger eyes. Every Japanese girl I've met obsesses over these creases, whereas I'd never noticed them until they were pointed out to me...

And I gotta say I "LOLed hard" when Az mentioned Ayumi Hamasaki, I was just reading about the Avex/2ch issues: in a nutshell, Avex is releasing the dragostea song (I'm sure you all have seen the flash by now, it even has its own wikipedia entry (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dragostea_Din_Tei)) and basically stole the 2ch (famous Japanese forum, setting for the original Densha Otoko story) "nomaneko" mascot to sell their album, claiming they were only "inspired" by the character; 2ch responded by creating a new character based on hamasaki's symbol (Avex produces her albums), dubbed nomatako (and mockingly claimed they were only inspired by Ayumi's logo...
http://www.2ch.net/nomatako/1.jpg

The first time I saw a photo of Hamasaki, I yelled
"uchuujin! she looks like a fucking alien!"

Yeah, its because your eyes dont grow (more than some minute amount) as you grow so we naturally associate them with innocence and youth. Babies are cute (and cute sells in Japan) so big eyes are considered a good feature. I agree with the assessment of the pic above.

I have small eyes or chinky eyes (as we call it in Cali/not a racial term). Hm...to think of it I don't see a lot of asian people at school with chinky eyes (mostly the fobs).

I hate when people ask me, "Can you see what I'm doing?" =_=' "Damnit, I'm not blind, dumbass. If I was, I'd need glasses."

I'd also like to include that not only do asian people have small eyes but sometimes you see other racis (sp?) who are not mixed with asian, have small eyes. This is very uncommon though.

this probably does not apply to asian cultures due to the original eye diffrence, but i know that big round eyes are a basis or biological atraction because they are the same size when young as old. but they are disproportionaly large when young. thus havign them in old age conveys youth, cuteness, and in the case of japanese men... pedophilia ;]

Personally, I attribute Asia's want for big eyes to their admiration of Western/European races and styles. You look through beauty magazines and the white models usually have nice big eyes and you can put a lot of cooool make up on those big eyes. But with smaller eyes, it's kinda hard. I've been battling the small eye problem forever and I have to say you can't do much with them. I'm not sure if it really has anything to do with Japan's obsession with their youths. Big eyes may go out of style in 20 years or so, just like America's idea of beauty changed from middle weight to super skinny.

it's not an asian thing... look at western models... they often have huge eyes... it's just less obvious because most westerners have medium sized eyes.

the whole baby's eyes are disproportionately large is correct... and so therefore conveys innocence and purity.

Having a "tall" nose (read: bridge) is also considered attractive.

Many jp girls actually want to look less cute, and more "gorgeous"... or more "sexy"

Cute is important too though.

Oddly, from another forum, I was looking through the miss universe website... none of the girls had eyes as large as hamasaki.

None of them I would consider huge eyes either.

Curiously, I'm as white as they come, with no Asian blood in me whatsoever, but I can do that...touch my eyes I mean. But my friends are saying I have Asian eyes.

But yeah, that Hamasaki girl is just freaky...why won't girls ever learn that we like them just the way they are?

(Oh, and hi everyone. Love the site Azrael! ;))

In response to Varia's little finger thing:

Yeah, it's called a brow ridge and not having one mildly sucks. You go and ready beauty magazines and they're like "apply to brow ridge" and I'm like "...screw you", for I haven't much a ridge.

Kinda sucks how Asians often times lack a lot of the defining facial features. Small nose bridges, small to no brow ridges, small unemphasized eyes, often times cheek bones aren't prominant or they're kind of low and lips are often times thin.

Actually, I think shiseido makes a product like that. Though most American stores do not sell it. But you can easily go to a china/japan town beauty store and I bet it'll be there.

The non-eye-threatening way to do it is to use tape. :p But that's a little old school.

My face is a weird mixture of South-East Asian, Chinese and Western European.(none of which mesh together, in my case) I have the thin eyes(whenever I'm in a picture I look like my eyes are almost closed) small wide nose(very hard to find sunglasses to fit my really wide bridge) and the hairyness of a French/Irish man.

So I'd think that Japanese should be happy they didn't get the worst of 2 different races.

Are you some white guy living in Japan? And what the hell does メッチャ mean? Vietnamenese people usually do have big enough eyes. It's the Koreans that usually have the very small eyes. The more south in Asia you go, the less likely you'll find the single eyelid or small eyed people. If anyone wonders why many Asians can be found with having such small eyes, it's because Asians developed another layer of skin on the eyes to protect the eye in cold climates when they evolved.

Did you try to say "major kawaii" or something? You probably should have used hiragana for the kawaii...

But yeah, it's genetically passed, so I wouldn't say that *many* asian girls do or don't have it. I haven't surveyed all of Asia (or any place, for that matter) for eyelids, but I imagine that since there's a product for it that a relatively large chunk of the population doesn't have them.

Are you sure about that? There are definitely other countries that lie on the same latitudes as Asian countries and so should have similar climates, thus, they *should* have the same small eyes, but as we can see, they don't really. If you're talking about nictitating mebranes, that was an overall human trait (irrelevant of ethnicity/locale), but now they're just that little pink thing in the inner corner of your eyes.

so THAT'S what eye talk is for.... o_O;; I saw it at the store and wondered what the hell it was... oh gods, the horror.... *shiver*

yes, the Japanese are OBSESSEd with eyes... not only the size, but the colour, the shape, the lashes. I get told a lot over here that I have pretty eyes.... the colour and everything.... ^^;;

japanese and their compliments are scary... I'm afraid I'm getting a bit bloaty headed. hearing that you're cute, sexy, beautiful etc every day does that to a girl... An ALT I know told me that it was because I was "the stereotypical gaijin", what every japanese imagine gaijins to be; tall, blonde, blue-eyed (and big-breasted by japanese standards).... All the girls are looking forward to next weeks school trip, to go to the onsen with me. oh, the pressure.....

This thing is not only popular in Japan but in China s well. There are many girls who get the double eyelid surgery done. It is fairly painless and pretty cheep too.

How do you I know this you ask? Well my wife told me last week that she had this done before she came to the US. She says that double eyelids are considered very attractive by Asian women and Men alike. So umm yea..

Maybe my in-laws (3rd generation Japanese-American) are weird, but they constantly made fun of my younger son's eyes, saying that he always looked so surprised. Made me pretty friggin angry considering he has my eyes.

My kids are 3/4 Japanese. They all have relatively large eyes compared to their Dad, but the eldest and youngest have more "Japanese" looking eyes than my younger son and I do.

This is my younger son.

I know! When I was teaching in China, we had one lesson on facial features. When we asked the students to make sentences, they said someone has single eyelids with the tone sounding like someone has a deformed mouth... single eyelids are VERY much looked down upon.
