View Full Version : Naruto Dub: What do you think?
*If it's not already clear, don't spoil the anime by mentioning things not in the anime (no matter how obvouis). Try to be curteous and aware. Thanks.*
Be fair and objective (that goes mostly to those who HATE dubs and don't give them a chance).
Be honest.
Have fun & Discuss.
As for me, I'll post later.

Well, the Naruto dub makes me want to roll up into a little ball and cry... :(
It's just not the same when Naruto's not yelling out "Dattebayo!" all the time. And the English voices suck (IMO)! They just don't have the emotion to them that the Japanese version does.
I miss Sasuke's little "Katon! Gokakyu No Jutsu!" (sp?). But at least they left kancho in...OMG! They left the kancho in *head desk*.
Yeah, the dub isn't as good as I'd hoped it would be, but what can ya do?

Japanese voices annoy me to no end, most of the time. As do bad dubs. Why? Because if you're going to do something, do it right. It's not hard. Good thing I don't like Naruto anyways.

It was alright, but I don't know why they'd substitute "Dattebayo" for "Believe it!" like he was in Ripley's Believe It Or Not (I think that little pun should be intended).
Sasuke was somewhat pitch-perfect, and Sarutobi (the Hokage) is growing on me.
We must be grateful. They kept in the "jutsu" part, and at least the kancho was kept in for humour. :D
SPOILERS:
I just hope they'll make Kisame's voice a bit more deeper, the Japanese one seems too "bishounen" for me.
My prediction: VIZ Media might make Haku a girl instead...?

i dont like the english dub either.
it just doesnt feel right.
and the way they pronounce the names is confusing.
everyone puts the emphasis on deferent parts in the names
i didnt like that.
though im hopefull they'll get better at this in the future

that is one way to translat dattebayo actualy
its more like "im telling ya!" but "belive it" is just as good.

I'm not a Naruto fan in the least but out of curiosity I've watched the first few dub episodes. The show's not really my cup of tea but the dub is ridiculously awesome. Probably the best anime dub I've ever heard. Naruto's voice especially is dead on with the way I figured the character sounded everytime I saw a picture of him. Same goes with most of the other characters I've heard/seen.

Stop complaining, folks, if you're REALLY Narutarded, you'd be sending VIZ Media complaint letters of how the English Cast doesn't compare to the Japanese! Nothing you can do about it except WATCH, or DON'T.

I agree with Shamu listen to the subbed one its way better the adult swim one sux o i have advent children who wants some!
I'll guess I'll just name a few charactars.
Naruto's voice -
...they did the right thing. Annoying, raspy, a female-like voice aswell. You can however tell the Japanese VA for naruto is A LOT more enthusiastic. Take the time to watch both and you'll see. But I actually like the dub's version of naruto. It doesn't give me many reasons to hate on it. As far as, "believe it," eh; they had to pick something to translate it to and I think it's fine.
Sasuke's voice -
:( :( His voice brings me to tears. Sasuke's suppose to have a deep, cocky and vengeful voice. He sounds like a 18 year old not quite out of pubery trying too hard in the dub. His voice to me is far too pitchy and isn't close. aah I can't stand it.
Kakashi's voice -
...... No lol. His voice doesn't seem peppy and go-lucky/funny guy like it did in the original. Maybe I'm the only one that noticed this. The voice they gave him is just so generic it would be too hard to describe why I don't like it. :( :P
Can't really expect much, but I also feel like Citizen when he says,
If you're going to try and do something, do It right.
More later.

that's pathetic.
*boycotts it* I say the first few episodes in Japanese and wasn't too interested, but I understand the complaints. I haven't really watched anime on TV since...wait, it's coming...I think the first run of Cowboy Bebop, and I only watched here and there. I either get the HK(read: bootleg) copy or download it these days. At even then, I've only been stocking up on the UC Gundam stuff. And I guess Gundam Seed Destiny now, which is pretty disappointing. Proves why none of the other alternate universes got sequels. >.>

It's not bad. I'm getting kind of annoyed that he says "Believe it!" *ALL* the time, I'd probably like a different translation of that phrase better there (if I knew any! heh). But that's more related to the original so overall I don't mind watching.

I personally like the dub... The voices aren't TERRIBLE, but they aren't OUTSTANDING either. The music is retained. Personally, the censorship (cutting scenes like Naruto and Sasuke accidentally kissing or the blood being digitally painted out) annoys me however. I mean, they can show Naruto transform with his "Sexy Jutsu", but why does the kind of stuff I mentioned have to be edited out? The script is pretty good too. I think we should be happy Viz has done all they can to actually please the fans, so quit complaining. At least it isn't another 4Kids tragedy.

From what I remember hearing, there isn't a real translation for that phrase.

haven´t watched Naruto at all, but from my experiences, english dubbing doesn´t equal the original japanese VA´s in expression, emotions, coolness. Japanese VA`s seem to be really into their characters, as if they are really acting. The voices seem to be perfectly casted for the characters.

I'm not much of a Naruto fan (at all) so I haven't seen it in Japanese. So all I had to compare the dub to was the first volume of the manga, and I didn't really see many problems. Some phrases were altered, some blood was cut but overall I think Viz did a pretty good job with the property.
And Kakashi is the greatest character on the whole show.

I was too lazy to read the rest of the thread and comment, but I didn't think it was all that bad. Plus if you didn't like it you can always buy DVDs with subs(or no subs!). I wouldn't mind casually watching it once in awhile, but I do prefer it in Japanese mostly cause i'm used to it.
Is it wrong to expect more from the people that dub it? Are people being judjemental when they say they don't like it? Are people that enjoy/tolerate the dub dumb?
Questions questions galore; keep my damn thread going ^^.

Hm...Dubbed Naruto..=_='
The thing is about the V.O. is that they pronouced some of the names wrong and the types of voice actors they used were not the types that fit the charaters personality.

Much like the voice actor from the japanese Naruto, his voice should be loud and (yes) somewhat annoying.
I don't really remember the other voice but when I hear them again tommorrow, I will comment on them.

Mmh... I have to say that I am not a big fan of dubbing. But I simply must say that what they did to Naruto when bringing it to Cartoon Network is easiest broken down into three steps:
Slap the creators of Naruto in the face.
Find the crappiest voice actors known to man (probably various McCauley Caulkin child clones).
Do the same crap that Cartoon Network does to all their shows that are raved about: Show one or two episodes, repeat them forever, then release one new episode once in a great while.
And there you have it; a recipe for success when you want to ruin an animé that is otherwise very enjoyable. My bias for dubbing aside, the voices didn't even match up. I mean, some of the characters would have been alright if they would have been a bit less sketchy, but can you honestly tell me that Cartoon Network has the audacity to severely blunder the voice of the character that's in every episode and expect not to get complaints and the like? I have to agree with Mr./Ms. Kanji (I apologize for the name, but I simply cannot read kanji) in that Naruto's voice should be acted out as loud and often times annoying. It is the personality trait that matches to the character. Without that voice, the character itself loses the flavor it had. Personally, I think they stopped trying altogether after Dragonball Z... It isn't the same Naruto at all, so I'll just stick to my hard drive full of sub-titled episodes, kthxbye.

Kakashi's voice was pretty good.
Sasuke's voice was damned good.
Naruto's voice was annoying.
Sakura's was ok, but inner Sakura was so god damned annoying I wanted to kick the TV.
Kage guy person's voice was pretty good.

Hmm...Okay, for a background I would I have high standards for English dubbing. The reason for this? Well the companies are suppose to dub it into ENGLISH not shred every little bit of Japanese culture from the anime. This is why English dubs usually turn out horrible. However, I'm not a dub hater! *Gasp*
There are several dubs I've enjoyed throughly...Trigun, Bebop, alot of stuff on Adult Swim turned out quite well.
Now, I recently(Over the past three weeks) watched the released 154 episodes of Naruto(made a pretty dent in my HDD Space) and then turned on the dub for fun.
--Naruto's voice isn't high enough, I think it was a character from DBZ, so they just went with a popular voice, the english directors, which was a big mistake.
--Sakura doesn't sound like a teenage girl, she sounds like a grown woman, I know she doesn't have exactly the highest voice ever, but she sounds atleast 20 years older then she is.
--Sasuke was sort of a savior, he was never exactly my favorite character, but his voice actor was picked decently.
--The Third's voice actor is monstrously horrible. He sounds old, but nothing like the original Third.
And the biggest voice actor mistake they made was Kakashi. Because Kakashi was my favorite character, I guess it impacts me more, but this is not something that would grow on me. It was too plain and didn't have that funny guy appeal. I don't blame them as much as I do for other characters though, Kakashi had a hard to match voice.
But lets shift off the voice actors for a second, it's the other things that bugged me the most.
The biggest thing that set off a flare was the intro and endings. I don't see why dubbers are consistantly set on always changing the intros. So what if there in Japanese? Don't tear apart the culture. Just put it into English.
The only suffix I heard was Kakashi-sensei. I was kinda happy about that, but I didn't hear things like Naruto-Kun, Hokage-Sama, they replaced the suffixs and other words incorrectly. It could have been better, especially it took so long to license Naruto, they could have just fixed it up a tad, I mean we've already waited this long, I would've waited a couple months for the improvements.
No matter how I look at it, I don't see it as worth watching. It is a pain that watching subs requires full attention to read what there saying, but the difference and quality gap is too deep considering I never thought Naruto to be an OUTSTANDING anime anyway, I mean it's good, but not perfect.
Anyway, that's my opinion, I think I touched on everything I needed too...

I know it is lame to take that stuff out, but if they are marketing it to younger AMERICAN kids, I understand. Most kids will know what sensei is, but not kun, thus leading them to thinking the show is called "Naruto" but about a kid named Narutokun.
Kakashi's voice was pretty good, for an American dub, they tend to take all the fun out of anime with dubs, making it more actiony.
American VAs (although some don't) usually don't put enough emotion in their voice.
Whilst some Japaneses Va's nearly put too much.

That's the thing though, it is marketed for kids, and it really isn't suppose to be. It kills the image of anime fans in america, and ruins the general public appeal. I doubt many kids will know what sensei is, other then what they say in 4th grade for the first week Naruto comes out. If it was dubbed to english rather then this culture and style shift, all dubbing would be good, ne?
I agree they overact sometimes in Japan, but that's what there suppose to do, and be direct doing it! It's completely opposite of how most japanese people would act and that's why that culture finds it entertaining. We of all people should know that, being fans of OP9.
It really puts a twist on the whole 'inner sakura' thing, because that's exactly what happens in Japan. They'll say something but think the complete opposite.
Like I said before though, there suppose to dub it into english, not make it suited for children or Western culture. Most people like anime because it isn't like western culture, and that's why people tend to dislike dubs.
P.S. - Dare I say, the FLCL Dub was better then the FLCL Sub....The director for FLCL himself said in director commentary he enjoyed the English VA's

But when they overact to me, I love it.
I hate when American VAs underact.
When they put American culture in it, it kills it. I didn't say I like it, but the reason people bring anime into America, is basically not for the fans (FLCL seems it was), it's to make money, kids get so caught up in it, so they make more money that way.
It sucks, but that's what fan-subs and DVDs are for!
dude no. Sasuke's voice sucked. It didn't sound mature at all, it had high points, and I swear his voice cracked a few times.

Komidol: You have every right to rant about the sub, but please take notice, these are people in dubbing companies who have no idea what the Western sub fans have a liking to. If they want it to appeal to 12+ older kids, then so be it. (That's the medium of the wanted viewers, as said.) If it was painful for you to watch it, then why bother doing it?
If "taking away their culture" when dubbing into English, picture this: would it obviously make sense if Naruto-kun calls Jiraiya ero-sennin? I don't want to put blame to the people who're dubbing Naruto, but people who're not of the desired viewers' age complaining about how the characters should sound like sounds like another doesn't sound right to me.
PS, Naruto is voice by Maile Flannigan, and she wasn't voiced in any DBZ episode.

That still doesn't make any sense though, Vocab. I mean, there suppose to dub it into english, not do a format change. And we're not basing it on how they should sound based on the desired viewer's age, we're basing it on the original. They should sound like the original. That's what they did in FLCL, and look how great that turned out for dubbing. Why? Because they didn't shred away the culture of it. Besides -sennin isn't a real sufffix, and ero is an adj. anyway...The name-{Level of respect to user} would make more sense especially when dubbing it so they don't put in stupid words so the lips sync up.
I know in some other animes they would say Master {Name} rather then {Name}-sama...And if there going to use Kakashi-sensei they should just go all out anyway.

Beside, I think we're biting each other's heads off.

And am I the only one in the entire world that usually prefers a dub, even if it is piss awful? Sure, I know some people say 'Oh, but the Japanese voices match the personality better/are more emotional/etc', but I'd take the English any day. They could be the best voice actor in the entire world, and it doesn't mean shit to me if I can't understand what the hell they're saying. =/

I will prefer dubs over subs if there of a slightly less quality, and not as good as the subs (Inuyasha, anyone?) But if there pissawful like the Naruto dub...well I just say no.
I agree that the original Naruto isn't that great of an anime though, it's decent, but nothing outstanding. Taking a decent thing and dragging it down though, it turns out REALLY BAD, demeans what it ever was. I guess that's why people are so upset about it.

As much as I hate to admit it, Naruto is like DBZ in some ways, that it's fighting anime, and they take a fairly long time to do things. Still, I think Naruto is executed in a much better fashion, in that they have good character development. Each character has there own special techniques and such rather then how many different ways to fire a beam of energy, and each character is more then
"Oh they have this much power, so there a filler until someone else gets there."
Plus I find the idea of ninja techniques to much more appealing.

Yeah, Naruto is alot like DBZ, but Naruto is more sophisticated and philosophical. Sasuke pisses me off more than Vegeta does, but hell, they're just idiots seeking perfection and aggressive gay sex. Damn Bishounens.
"Oh no, that little dropout is getting better than me... I better go suck Orochimaru's cock for Super Saiya-jin Powers."
What'd I tell ya?
In my opinion, I think there'll be fillers until next year or so, just so they can find some time to start out with the new Arc, where the storyline skips 3 years into the future, and Orochimaru gave Sasuke AIDS due to the fact condoms weren't made back then.

Well, they ARE philosophical in some way, the manga's way ahead of the anime, and in most parts, it does feel philosophical ("run down a hill without any regrets," "protect the ones you love no matter what path you choose," etc etc...), and, yeah.
I'll give that Basilisk anime some try, though. See if you're right and all.

Subs aren't just reading as alot of people proclaim, you stop focusoing on every word and watch the whole screen, it essentially becomes another way to watch media. You don't realize your reading line after line as you watch. However, this backfires too, this is also the reason I prefer dubs, if I'm busy, and can only glance at the screen once in a while, I obviously need some english. This is why I prefer some dubs even if there not as good as the sub (Inuyasha), but at the same time still won't watch them if there god awful bad (Naruto).

I was actually a little worried they'd make Haku a girl.
I thought so, too, but I think they got worried about "tha tr0o F4NZ!" complaining to them for butchering their most prized anime.
In my opinion, I think they'd be better off if they did make Haku a girl. Save the rambuncious bunch of hardcore Christians something to complain about, saying that VIZMedia is telling kids that homosexuality is alright, lovely, and HARDCORE. *Winks to Zabuza and Haku*
:D
Vocab: go easy on the manga material. I don't want spoilers or clues to spoilers in the thread :)
And that Haku thing...
There was a line when Naruto found out Haku wasn't a girl. He was scratching his head and the subs said something like,
"Ahh...the many wonderful mysteries of the world."
WHAT!?
I think the writers are trying to tell us something. And the Zabu and Haku thing.......homosexuality AND pedophilia all wrapped up into one not so subtle story line. Although, I'd have to say it's been one of my favorite arcs. The fight scene was nice, the animation/coloring was good, and it was one of the earlier episodes. And they threw in A LOT of plot and emotional twists and such. The last episode of that arc felt like a movie because so much happened.

Episode 19 is my all-time favourite. *sniff* Still sad how they died..
I watched several episodes of Naruto subbed a few months before the dubbed came out. The first episodes were pretty interesting, but after that, I just couldn’t stand it. If I had to watch one more battle scene that took five episodes to complete because of all the sad emo flashbacks, I was going to scream.
As for the quality of the dubbing, I knew it was going to be bad when I heard the Cartoon Network announcer call it Nar-ROO-dough, or something like that. Oh well, I don’t really care. All dubs lose a lot of their good quality when translated. Try watching Furturama in Spanish, yuck.

A favorite point of discussion for me and a girl I knew was how that the entire series could have been resolved before it began if people just hugged their kids.
Barring that, in the initial 20 episodes, I had actually hoped the show would take a very counter-to-norm line on morality. I prayed that these kids would learn harsh lessons about the neccessities of ninja survival in their world. Instead, they teach these 20+ year old 'elite' ninjas that being nice is the way to get the 'good end'.
And manga readers, was hte events surrounding 279-281 not complete and utter crap?

Gaara issue is fixed in the anime. see spoiler'd stuff.
Also, they give a detailed explanation of Chouji's pill. It isn't *OMG POWER ACH NOW DEAD*, it just has side effects that are extremely dangerous.
Fairly minor SPOILER alert beyond this point!:
In addition, Chouji recieves the best medical help imaginable. If Orochimaru thinks he can have his arms healed, then Tsunade can certainly fix whatever happens (forgot) to Chouji.
Gaara: isn't confirmed dead, and is carried away after the fight. In fact, it is assumed he's still alive. This also appears in the GBA game.

And I think Oro being able to fix his arms when part of his SOUL was ripped out is bull too.

Can't really expect much, but I also feel like Citizen when he says,
More later.
I notice it that. I dont like Naruto Dub voice, and saying jutsu after english translated on the ninja special moves.
Naurto is one of the few animes I cant watch in the Dub version.

That soul thing is a bit of a misleading idea, depending what concept you think of "soul" in, personally, I concider it lifeforce, but yeah, was a bit odd, still nothing is black and white.
Of course Chouji's gonna say that, he was friken told not to use it, or he will die, he doesnt know some medical specialist might be able to stop the effect of the pill or whatnot =\
If you get your arm severed these days you might live with medical treatment, back in the middle ages, you would just concider yourself dead due to blood loss, or infection if not that.
Also who says Tsunade didnt send out the medical squad, and they'd recovered both Chouji and Neji moments after their fight? the flashbacks are just for "viewer reference" (as Naruto is sooooo kind to give us </sarcasm>).
Taking everything for what's said is a pretty stupid thing to do, as they even say in Naruto, "see underneath the underneath" or whatever lol

Remember that Naruto and Gaara have demons inside them? Well, there are 10 Demons throughout the Ninja world, and two of them are inside Gaara and Naruto: Shukaku (Badger/Racoon), and Kyuubi (Fox), respectively.
The Akatsuki are in search for the 10 Monsters (or "Jinichuri" in the Manga), planning for more power, and possibly, to create a new Monster.
The Akatsuki caught Gaara, and extracted the Demon within him, thus, also extracting all his Chakra.

That's why I prefer the Manga over the Anime.
Theory of why there are fillers: They're thinking of what to do with the voice actors, since after the "Finding Sasuke" Arc, it jumps 2.5/3 years into the future, where Naruto trains under Jiraiya.

But I was dissapointed (though not even remotely surprised) when Sasuke lived. I would have been awed if they'd killed him right there, without having gotten him developed at all. I believe I mentioned earlier in the thread that I would have loved the show to be about how real life shattered and broke the kid ninja's idealism

Yeah, I fully agree there, Naruto needed more "reality shock factor", if it had that, then it'd kick even more ass, like if Lee could never be healed or such, Orochimaru actually died instead of switching bodies >.>, you know, all the stuff that we can all tell with normal anime logic that isnt gonna happen.

I agree with the person who said Kakashi's voice actor doesn't fit the character very well. He first came across as emotionless badass, the type who doesn't really say anything but just kicks ass when he needs to. Since then there has been character development that seems to contradict this image.

like if Lee could never be healed or such...
We had to go through Rock LeeANGST just to see him survive the operation.

I knew Lee would be back. I couldn't even imagine him busting out all badass like in the 48-50s and NOT coming back. But Gaara must die. I'm so sick of his ass living (1) Survives Rock Lee. I call bullshit and 'plot no jitsu'. 2) Survives Naruto by becoming his second best friend. 3) Survives Kimimaro by sheer dumb luck. Kimimaro should have killed him there. 4) SURVIVES DEATH BY TOTAL BULL)

I'll be waiting to see it until after Episode 19.
Such a sacred episode, 'tis true.

The dub? I wonder how they are going to handle it. That's a decent amount of blood.
