What are Japanese High school students like?

There is a Japanese exchange student here at my school and I asked him what the difference was between an american high school student and a Japanese high school student. He told me that we were noisy and we laughed a lot! I asked him if that was a bad thing and he shook his head no. Are we really that noisy?

No way, I thought that Japanese students were quite active themselves. Well, maybe they are, but they know how to be quiet at times. I guess it depends on the person itself. But japanese girls are more cheery, definately.

How did you not know that American high school students are obnoxiously loud and off-task?

What the hell kind of a nice school do you go to?

Quiet???

Man. You haven't met my cousin and his friends. To put it simply, when they graduated from high school, one of his friends went through the ceremony in his underwear, wearing a Mexican wrestling mask and a cape.

It depends on the teacher though. And the amount of work they give. In half my classes we're too busy working to accomplish the task to have idle chat.

That's why I have great respect for teachers who can keep students on-task while making the classroom casual. I have several of those this year. ^_^

Japanese students are notoriously quiet.

and dashboard confessional is a notoriously good band

i don't know about when they're in the US, but at the high school i attended, most of them were loud, excitable, and constantly gossiping.

basically they were american high school students - fat - breasts + super crazy cell phones + a lot of manga.

This is my own personal view from a rather selective populace of japanese high school students:

Me: "What is 犬 in english?" [いぬ] (dog)

Class: "..."

Granted, this is in class with a group of kids who don't give two shits about english. However, the theme of reticent students when dealing with interaction in the classroom isn't exactly unheard of. At the very least, in terms of interaction that 'we' experienced when dealing with our own language classes in high-school/college.

it's much different when you're a fellow student.

From pespective, in a nonclassroom setting, they usually seem fairly normal by japanese standards.

I always imagined that Japanese studens would be very robotic. I wouldn't know though because I never went to a Japanese highschool or Japan for that matter.

I dunno about the highschool students, maybe they are more studious, but the middle schoolers are effing insane. I don't remember being as excited as they are on a daily basis in my classes once in my entire three years in middle school. They get so into everything and they yell and scream, its crazy.

Aren't there entrance exams for certain highschools in Japan? I know this is slightly random, but I feel if the students studied hard enough to get into a certain school, they would be pretty good.

Well... I have never been to another country or anything, so it is hard to compare the way we act with other schools out of this country. But then again... I go to a very srange school.

That sounds fun. Fufufu!

But I am confused... Is your cousin Japanese or American?

He's Japanese. He went to a school where a lot of children of various famous people went, so there was an element of rebellion and such. All of his friends were freaks (but man, they were fun to hang out with).

Shit, I would have paid to see something like that at my graduation.

The teachers at my high school were having us open our robes as we lined up to go into the ceremony just to make sure we were dressed appropriately. No fun at all. This was at a suburban Los Angeles high school.

That's when you should wear crazy clothes UNDER your appropriate clothes! ^.^

Okay, first of all, Japanese students are NOT quiet. And they don't need to be intelligent to get into High School. Yes, there's an exam, but that's wrote memorization. It's far less rigorous than it seems. Japanese High School differences? They smoke, they wear uniforms, the fuck in the gymnasium, and otherwise deliquentate (made up word) their juvenile selves unless they're at a high level school.

the fuck in the gymnasium,

*eyebrows shoot up into hair*

Certainly haven't seen anything of THAT nature going on at my school. Not that I would be particularly amazed if it were...

If thoughs are the only differences then there its really is no difference at all. The only difference is that they wear uniforms. In my high school kids had sex on the buses, in the restrooms, and in the gym. They Smoked in the parking lot and at the bus stop. Every time the Police brought the drug dogs to school some body gets busted. We also have had time when students would fights.

(Funny Story) One time two students got in to a fight and the Vice Principle tried to break it up. One of the student punched him in the face and then he got pissed and through 2 or three back and then the cops came in a broke it up. Later that day both of the kids parents came to school to talk with the Principle and then the parents got in to a verbal fight which turn in to a fist fight. lol

Japanese schools are far less disciplined than American ones. You'll have to take my word on this one. At least at the suburban level.

Before we got a different principal two years ago,my school was like that. It'll be a nice change again... God I hate my school.

it all depends on the kind of school, less studious kids go to less elitarian schools.
