Well, the funny thing is that Heath Ledger is a big named star so I'd like to see them get close to his funeral.

Besides aren't they taking him back to Australia anyway?

I hate it when anyone gives these nuts attention, which is what they are screaming for anyway.

Isn't that Church trying to broadcast their religious beliefs across the nation through mass media? Or maybe they think that they are representing the views and believes of all churches, who are not getting media coverable.

I mean even talking about them right now is part of what they are trying to do.

They're having both a US funeral and a Aussie funeral. They're only picketing the US funeral because they could be legally arrested for it in Australia.

Seriously tho, i don't think they can actually be 'Christians'... as they may have got off on the wrong track when they started to proclaim hate instead of love and stuff. I think they literally have to have some kind of mental disorder and should proly be institutionalized.

Is brainwashed considered a mental disorder? :watson:

It's debated by the APA.

Brainwashing is thought reform or a type of re-education. It consist of any effort to install certain attitudes and beliefs in a person. Religions tend not to do that unless you just believe that's what they are.

Then again what is happening to the Westbro people is technically brainwashing depending how its looked. These people are closed off from the world worse than the Amish. Their life revolves around whatever the head of the church tells them. They literally are cut off from the world and have been that way for a long time. So much so that they don't understand the way society works.

This Felps man is a man with a 19th century mindset living in the 21st century. There is a huge conflict here. Baptist churches dislike him because he uses its name to spread a hateful message. Which completely contradicts what Christianity is supposed to be about.

I actually feel sad for them.

It's obviously for nothing more than publicity, because really, what other reason would there be to protest a funeral? The person is dead, it's over, they're not "sinning" anymore.

I say this for two reasons.
1. I'd like to believe that it's not just to torment the mourners, because I'm not that cynical yet.
2. I'd like to believe that if heaven and hell really do exist, that anyone who uses tactics like this to gain publicity automatically gets a cunt punt straight to hell when they die.

Chuckles
01-30-2008, 05:48 AM
They have a few reasons. The major one is publicity, but they also like to make the deceased's loved ones feel bad about their so-called sins.

Also, since this is all legal, they used to try to bait people into trying to stop their protests (at which point they'd sue the state/city for infringing on their right to assembly). Lawsuits over this stuff is part of how they got the money to be able to travel so much and... well, produce rap videos apparently.

Hate Groups, Religious Insanity: The Most Hated Woman In America: Twisting the gospel (http://www.religionnewsblog.com/20462/shirley-phelps-roper)
http://www.ketv.com/2007/0605/13447125_240X180.jpg

Ottawans who remember August 1999 and Parliament Hill will know the name Shirley Phelps-Roper (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shirley_Phelps-Roper), and the woman who has been called The Most Hated Woman In America is back in the news again with her anti-homosexuality crusade, this time over the death of actor Heath Ledger, but she has some new shots against Canada as well.

Reached on the phone to explain the link God Hates Canada on the website of her Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka, Kansas — headquarters of her war against the homosexuality she and church members say is destroying the world — Phelps-Roper, 50, lawyer, mother of 11, says: “Canada is like the United States, a filthy, perverted, immoral, nation. America is doomed. The Bible prophesied all of this, the end time. God chose America to show the way, the Christian principles, but it’s over, America is collapsing from within. Canada is doomed, too. I was so thankful to get out of your sick country. It has no hope.”

Westboro Baptist Church
The Westboro Baptist Church is a hate group masquerading as a Christian church. Led by Fred Phelps, members — who have deluded themselves into thinking that they are followers of Jesus Christ — of this church target homosexuals with messages of hate.
The group’s extremist views and despicable behavior mark it as a cult of Christianity
Note: We file news items about the Westboro Baptist Church under the heading of ‘religious insanity,’ because in our opinion that is the kindest description of the group’s idiotic behavior
How various religions and denominations view homosexuality (http://www.apologeticsindex.org/h17.html#views)
Research resources on homosexuality (http://www.apologeticsindex.org/h17.html)
.

Phelps-Roper had just got back from Los Angeles where, the night before, she and six others from the church, focusing on Heath Ledger, picketed the SAG (Screen Actors Guild) awards, Phelps-Roper quite proud of her own signs that said God Hates Fags and Heath In Hell and God Hates Fag Enablers.

Ledger’s sin? He played a homosexual in the movie Brokeback Mountain. Phelps-Roper: “God hates the sordid, tacky, bucket of slime, seasoned with vomit, known as Brokeback Mountain, and He hates all the persons having anything to do with it.” (God watches movies? I wonder if he puts butter on his popcorn.)

Phelps-Roper says God delivered his punishment against the “fag agenda” in America through divine homicide: Hurricane Katrina, the 9/11 bombing of the World Trade Center, and — get ready — the Iraq war so He could kill thousands of U.S. soldiers, hoping the nation gets His message.

Don’t pick yourself up off the floor just yet — she also states: “It’s the same with your country’s soldiers who’ve been killed in Afghanistan; it’s God’s command against the fag agenda in Canada.”

Phelps-Roper was in the local news back in ‘99 when she dispatched her father, Westboro Baptist Church pastor Fred Phelps, and one of her kids to Parliament Hill to protest the Supreme Court decision granting homosexuals equality and the right to use the word “spouse.” The kid stomped on the Canadian flag.

A month after 9/11 Shirley Phelps-Roper and seven others entered Alberta where they waved God Hates Fags signs outside six Calgary churches and the Prairie Bible Institute in Three Hills where her dad graduated after, she says, “the American college he enrolled in wouldn’t accept blacks and he said ‘I’m outta here.’ ” The Institute now, she says, “has lost its way.”

I ask if she’s sure God really hates poor, little Canada. Yep, and she refers me again to her church’s website: Warning! To God’s elect: Leave Canada now!!! followed by “Canada hoisted a filthy fag finger in the face of God by passing a law making any criticism of homosexuals a crime punishable by fines and imprisonment … for years WBC has warned that Canada is a homo-fascist state where the filthy fag agenda has become the law of the land … God hates Canada.”

If one of Phelps-Roper’s own children told her he/she was gay?

“They wouldn’t tell us, they’d know better. They’d just slip away under the cover of darkness.”

You’d disown them? “I wouldn’t have to. They’d have disowned themselves. They’d be gone on their own.”

How nice. The gospel according to The Most Hated Woman In America.

It is Frequently Asked Questions. Check any MMORPG support page. Anyway in a book by L.Ron.Hubbard intended for level eight 'enlightened' $cientologists the so called 'historical figure' Jesus is portrayed as a pedophile who 'had sexual relationships with men and young boys'.

On the topic I'm not surprised that the church might be against gay people. It's not something like the recognition of the Earth actually being round... oh wait - they killed several people before they finally agreed. I personally don't care about what people believe in as long as it's not distributed around in order to create new believers or to attack 'enemies' of the church. I'm also pro-spiritualism as a personal thing that should be kept personal or at most shared in a small group with similar beliefs.

Organized religion brings with itself a power lust that could be very harmful if those people are given power over other people's lives. What happens today with $cientology is a fine example of one such event. Actors layers politicians and even doctors who by definition have an influence on society way above the normal level are trained in a series of dogmatic disciplines that encourage protectionism of the system often at the expense of individual human rights. And when people outside of that system are forced to suffer for it their lives ruined by blackmailing and public humiliation what we have is a dangerous cult gaining popularity by drawing in celebrities and gaining power by drawing in top litigators and by accumulating excessive amounts of money under the banner of 'charity'.

This gentlemen is a world-wide pyramid organization protected by the banner of religion while convicted of exploitation and even murder. If you don't support Anonymous support the truth. The only reason they do it is because they get attention. I don't agree with a violent display towards the WBC simply for the fact hurting those guys would be doing something worse than they themselves are doing. All that is just fueling them to continue with their twisted message.

I saw a documentary of them and some guys drove by in a car trying to hit one of them with a cup of something they were never able to identify. It worked, but instead they hit one of the 8-9 year old boys instead in the face. Luckily it didn't cause him any damage other than a bruised face... But with situations like that, do you really think violence is the answer?

It's sad to see the forums have degenerated to discussions like this. I guess that's the price of fame though. If that "flyer" is not a fake, it is some messed up person or persons trying to stir up drama. Anyone who has any real knowledge of Christianity would know that though. Believe what you wish, but God doesn't "hate" homosexuals. The Bible specifically says, hate the sin, not the sinner. Any genuine Christian would agree and wouldn't refer to them as "fags". Any supposed Christian that would share the sentiment of that flyer has got their values / ethics seriously out of whack. I am a Christian, and I do not hate homosexuals. As a matter of fact, I love them, but I disagree with their lifestyle choice. I am far from perfect, and I have made my share of poor choices in life. I am certainly no better than any other sinner. I just happen to be saved by the grace and mercy of God. Unfortunately, there are people in the world who profess to be Christians who don't exactly have a clue what that really means.

No, just beliefs.

As to who is what - that's simple. To me, the bulk of you are failed Jews. You've messed up the Decalogue and mucked up the first commandment.

I'm caustic because the asshole Brothers who taught at the parochial school in the neighborhood encouraged 6th graders to pound my 2nd grade ass for being Jewish and being a "Christ Killing Kike" ... which is why I took up karate.

And kids? If you really want to flaunt the fact you're Christian ditto heads - take it to IRC or PM each other.

Quit yo hatin', foo!!!

I don't know much about Westboro, but it seems like they just want to bash on anyone that goes against their beliefs, with no plan of a peaceful resolution.
Umm . . . folks, they don't even care about that.

They're attention whores.

When the space shuttle Columbia shredded itself over Texas, Westboro announced that this was because God was punishing the U.S. for permitting homosexuality.

When the World Trade Center towers were destroyed by jets hijacked by homicidal Muslim terrorists, Westboro announced that this was God's punishment against the U.S. for tolerating homosexuality.

Westboro has picketed dozens, maybe even hundreds, of funerals of American soldiers who died in combat in Afghanistan and Iraq, screaming that these soldiers died because God is punishing the U.S. for allowing homosexuals to exist within its borders.

Their goal is basically to cause an incident resulting in damage or injury, after which they sue the cities and individuals involved, demanding huge settlements. They sue the police for failing to provide appropriate levels of protection. They harrass the families to provoke an incident, carefully observing the finer legal points so that they themselves can't be countersued or blocked.

Westboro is run by Fred Phelps, who is an attorney. His "congregation" is his family members -- sons and daughters, their spouses, his grandchildren, and so on. Quite a few of them are lawyers, too. They train the non-lawyers in the limits of the law so that none of them act in a way that opens the "church" or the family up to a lawsuit.

It's basically a giant scam.

No doubt Phelps hates homosexuals, and no doubt his family is royally f*cked in the head. But it's less of a "church" than a combination lawsuit factory and media event. Really.
