Is anyone else ABSOLUTELY FUCKING PISSED about how Whore-ywood is remaking this Japanese film? I really really liked the original source material (which is of course subject to personal taste), but no! They just can't keep bastardizing and butchering good Japanese movies!

ARGH!

Why can't we get more movies like 'The Host' where they do a decent job and just translate the movie? You can even watch it in the original language if you wait for a DVD release! But, alas, all movie corps care about in America is how much cash they can fucking line their pockets with.

Argh.

I agree.

Also, I didn't understand the ending to the Japanese version of the movie; the part where the detective swallows the piece of candy and the female actress smiles about it.

Not sure why you picked The Host out of all Asian movies, but whatever. The Host was good, but there was one aspect that reeeeeally pissed me off, and you see it in a decent amount of Asian movies. And this is shitty American actors. I swear that military officer who they gave the most lines had like a lazy and couldn't act to save his life. I wish they would get actual actors rather than random people off the street, but meh.

And of course remakes of Asian horror movies are going to be terrible... Pretty much always has been that way.

But remakes don't always turn out poorly. Look at The Departed.

Remakes of American classics have a slightly higher chance of suceeding because the director may feel inclined to do honor to our heritage. They feel no such obligation when they're pulling something from across the ocean.

And which movie are you talking Slick? I've only watched the third one in the series :[

(PS- I love the host. I watched it in Korean w/ Japanese subtitles. And didn't understand anything. But then I watched it in English later when I was back in America.)

Ah, I saw it on DVD in Korean with eng. subs, but there were just some parts where the characters actually spoke in english. It was a lot of fun, and to be honest that was my only big critique on the movie, the horrible acting from the English speaking actors. The special effects definitely weren't mind-blowing either, but that's never a big deal for me.

edit: I just read what you said, and I don't think you know about where The Departed came from. It is NOT a remake of an "American classic". It is a remake of a Hong Kong detective movie/ thriller with almost the exact same story, minus a different ending, called Infernal Affairs

Oh. I thought it was a Chinese film that was heavily funded by American Entertainment PACs.

I'm pissed how it's showing up on the in-game advertising for Quake Wars.

honestly as long as they don't fuck up my Battle Royale with the American remake I'll be fine, but if they pull a The Grudge on it so help them God there will be blood and hell to pay

Agreed... Though I really think they need to just stop with the series. When Fukasaku Kinji died and the had some other guy direct it really went to shit with BR 2. I HATED that movie so, so much. It was like they took the concept of Battle Royale, instead of putting in normal school kids put in a bunch of douchebags nobody could care about, some inexplicable gimmicks that make it feel like a video game (if you die, your partner dies/ vice versa), not enough Kitano Takeshi, and some (very) shallow anti-American political commentary for good measure. The only thing really remaining from the original was teenagers killing each other from just a purely exploitative standpoint, but when you can't empathize with any of the characters even that doesn't work.

Hollywood needs to quit with the remakes period. Anyone that pays to go see a half-assed remake is basically telling Hollywood, "Yes, please shit in my mouth and tell me it's a brownie, I will eat it all."

I actually liked the movie a lot. Kinji Fukasaku was the director for BR2, and was making the movie in the planning stage. After he died the "some other guy" who took over was hes son, Kenta Fukasaku. He still consulted with hes father on the movie, e.g. Kenta has said that the ending would have been very diffrent (everyone dies, or something along those lines), if it wasnt for hes fathers suggestions.

I'm aware his son directed it, that doesn't make it any less of a giant turd to me :(

TBH, everyone dies probably would have been a better ending than "teenagers fight off the army and go live in the middle east...

Ya know...Japanese horror & their remakes don't do anything for me. I'm not a fan of either.
