the Year (http://www.reuters.com/article/newsOne/idUSL1987511820071219). This is quite odd, but then you think about it, and it kinda makes sense. I guess they had to give him some recognition at the end of 2 terms. Although I must say he is better than Al Gore or J.K. Rowling.

As I said before on another forum, this is their first good choice in years.

Me too. That was the first thing I thought of when I saw "I guess they had to give him some recognition at the end of 2 terms."

He's already gotten it twice.

Hasn't Putin been cracking down on dissenters' speech and moving Russia more towards totalitarianism again?
Then again, didn't Hitler get man of the year once?

Yes, Hitler did.
However, that only really stands out as odd to people who have no idea what the Man of the Year award represents.

I thought the man of the years is usually some guy who has contributed to major changes in the world for the greater good. Isn't this Bladdermir Poop'in guy an evil dictator of some sort?

What? You mean I wasn't a good choice for person of the year some years back?

It's commonly thought that that is what 'Person of the Year is meant to represent, but it has nothing to do with the greater good at all, as stated specifically by TIME:
TIME's Person of the Year is not and never has been an honor. It is not an endorsement. It is not a popularity contest. At its best, it is a clear-eyed recognition of the world as it is and of the most powerful individuals and forces shaping that world—for better or for worse.
This is why it is the opinion of many, myself included, that many of the past awards have been feel good cop-out choices; TIME couldn't live up to their own standards.
What? You mean I wasn't a good choice for person of the year some years back?
I think that naming 'The American Soldier' as Person of the Year was stupid. And yes, I'm aware that something similar to that has gotten Person of the Year before.

Methinks he was referring to when they named "You" the person of the year :p

That was last year. He said 'years back' and I know that Mechs is in the military so I figured he was referring to that.

Chuckles was right :D. I was refering to the "You" person of the year. I just forgot when that was.
You know, I thought Putin was supposed to be this bad guy that was trying to go bac to the old commie ways of old mother russia....guess I was wrong.

Not necessarily wrong :p
He is supposed to be very hardline and has expressed some anti-US sentiment, but I doubt he wants another cold war. Restoring Russia to a more prominent status is probably something he'd like though :p But as the other person said, Man of the Year isn't for good people, it's for people who have changed the world or are in a position to, good or bad. After 9/11 they were going to give the award to Osama Bin-Laden, but they decided not to because they (correctly) figured that everyone would think they were praising him for his actions. They awarded it to Jools instead.
Edit : Oops'd. Wrong year ;)

By that measure, Cheney should have gotten it. No man has single-handedly done more to destroy the world that he has this year.
Bush really is a fool who has surreounded himself and been surrounded by some of the most ruthless and miserable people on the planet. He's in for a rude awakening when in 9 months they drop him like a rock and he's left without a job or any friends.
