View Full Version : The Greatest Videogame lineup in videogame history?

Decade

Any gamers know that this fall has been host to possibly the greatest videogame line up in history. Anybody want to list their favorites from this year?

Just going with the 360 for me:

Halo 3
Half Life 2 The Orange Box
Naruto Rise of a Ninja
Mass Effect
Call of Duty 4
Assassins Creed

You guys?

Saitou Hajime

Your list (aside from Naruto as I haven't played it/don't have an interest in it), plus Super Mario Galaxy, and going a little farther back into the summer when it all started, BioShock.

Decade
11-09-2007, 02:15 AM
ONLY reason I havent put Super Mario Galaxy on the list is cause I dont have a wii (likewise Super Smash Brothers Brawl)

And yes, even though I dont play scary games, and can not deny Bioshock as being another fantastic game.

I wish Smash was still coming out this year, would have been amazing. :( At least my wallet won't suffer as much, and I'll probably wait to get Assassin's Creed for Christmas, too. I just need me mah Mario next week.

Any gamers know that this fall has been host to possibly the greatest videogame line up in history.

I take it you just started gaming in seventh gen?

Decade

Instead of trying to act smart, why not just tell us the one you thought was better and what games were part of it?

Citizen

Instead of trying to act smart

Irony.

Anyway, I don't have one period in mind. I was thinking more along the lines of any given quarter during the height of both the 4th (SNES, Genesis) and 5th gens (PSX, N64, Saturn), as well as several in the 6th (DC, PS2, GC, Xbox). Hell, even the 3rd gen pumped out more good games, and the only console of any value that gen was the NES.

Most of the games you listed are sequels, so if you want a comparison, just look back to whatever period those series started. Chances are it was stronger than Q3 2007.

Decade
11-09-2007, 03:10 AM
So you don't have a particular quarter and list of games in mind.

When you get one, let us know. You cant deny the greatness of systems past. I just want to know what in particular you thought was better than now. If there's so many great games in the past (there was), surely there was a specific time you can bring up and a list of true classics released then that you can at least try to list. Use wikipedia if you have to, just bring back the nostalgia for us.

Swede

This is definitely one of the biggest quarters in recent memory for me. I don't play games near as much as I used to, but if money was no option, even with just the systems I own (wii and pc) there are probably about 4 games either out now or coming soon that I really want.

I'll see what I can do tomorrow, if I get bored. Though to be honest, I'm not even sure what kinds of keywords to Wiki/Google for something like that. Doing it game by game would be fucking annoying. But we'll see. Probably best to start with 4th gen.

Edit: Maybe "[Year] in video games"

I know Wiki has pages like that for music. That'd work.

Just to make things a bit easier (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:1990s_in_video_gaming). For me no particular quarter really stands out, but I know 2004 was a year where I managed to try out the most new games, just barely enough to make a top 12 (not that some of them were really great games though >_> )

Wow the greatest lineup in history consists of a bunch of mediocre FPS and a Naruto game. Nice 0_o.

Since when was Assassin's Creed an FPS? And did you just call the Orange Box mediocre?

Since I didn't know what that game was, I assumed it was another mediocre fps. In either case, I probably would never like it.

I'm going to assume that you're assuming the game is like the Hitman series. For the record, it is not. (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v367/Dresh/AssassinsCreed.jpg) I've not played it myself, but I prefer seeing at least remotely educated opinions as opposed to those that are formed based off of minimal information.

Originally a pc game. and the orange box is a compilation of Half Life 2, episode 1, episode 2, team fortress 2, and a new first person puzzle game called portal. 5 games.

ZaichikArky
11-09-2007, 12:44 PM
I actually am well aware of the contents of the orange box. I hear everyone talk about portal so often, that it's actually a game I'm willing to try because it's not exactly an FPS.

The only FPS I ever liked was Wolfenstein. Doom was okay, just too hard for an 8 year old maybe. And that's because at the time, I had access only to about 7 games.

Saitou Hajime
11-09-2007, 12:54 PM
Portal's more of a first person puzzle game, with very little action, so I think you'd enjoy it more than a regular FPS. It's very funny, too.

Also Zaichik, even though you don't like FPS games, BioShock is well worth it for the atmosphere and story.

ZaichikArky
11-09-2007, 01:06 PM
Yeah. I really love puzzle/logic/strategy games even though I often end up being not so great at them. That's why I want to try it. The unfortunate situation is that my computer(2003 laptop) is no where good enough to run Portal, even with its ram upgrade it had a year ago.

Check the fall. Or 1998.

So basically you have just a list of overhyped lineup in videogame history. CoD4 is a scripted railshooter with unlimited health according to the demo and Mass Effect is an xbox-rpg from bioware.
I won't say anything on halo 3 as I haven't played it or other halo games yet, but if Bioshock's hype and reviews are an indicator, halo 3 is nowhere near Halflife or System Shock 2.

ZaichikArky

^ Agreed.

I liked that list a lot, actually. I'd probably check out what was happening around 1990-1996 since IMO all the "best" games came out for the SNES.

CoD has always been scripted, yes. But I don't know how you can praise Half-Life without talking about scripted events. The "unlimited health" is what most new shooters are doing now: You recover health by taking cover. Its far from unlimited, especially on higher difficulties. It just forces you to play a little more tactically and makes it so you don't get stuck in those situations where your game saved, you have 10 health, and its impossible to move on.

Halo 3- meh, was never that big into Halo, I don't think its anything revolutionary, but a decent shooter.

You're also neglecting to mention the multiplayer in both of these games, which for many people is the big appeal to it.

Argh, well, first of all, half life is 8 years old, cod 4 is maybe 2 days, so I feel that one had/has right to be the revolutionary scripted shooter from 8 years ago but one is same old "we have seen this for eight years now, maybe come up with something other than planting a bomb on a glowing spot on aa-gun?".
And hl hid it's scripts a bit better if I remember correctly.

Also halflife's multiplayer mods are a bit more legendary than halo's or cod's.

But anyway, 1998 fall had mgs, hl, baldur's gate, LOZ:OOT, Thief: The Dark Project and Fallout 2. Oh yeah and Starsiege: Tribes (halo's crotchfacehumping doesn't even compare to the tribes-series).

edit: ducking and covering doesn't protect from nukes and doesn't regenerate bullet wounds or limbs lost in a hit from a rpg.

And neither does a green box with a red cross on it. None of these games are striving for hyper realism.

In any case, its news to me that you can survive nukes and hits from an rpg in CoD. I actually wasn't even aware there were nukes in general in the game.

But really, if that type of thing is a problem, turn up the difficulty; you get stuck in the crossfire, you're dead.

I for one think that in single player games the "duck and cover" health recovery is more fun and forces you to play a bit more tactically as opposed to picking up health packs. (duck and cover as opposed to run and gun)

Halo 3
Half Life 2 The Orange Box
Naruto Rise of a Ninja
Mass Effect
Call of Duty 4
Assassins Creed
Halo 3 sucked.
HL2 was awesome but nothing earth shattering.
Narutard.
Mass Effect will be delayed because Bioware always delays until the last possible second.
Call of Duty 4 is fun but doesn't grab me like the original did.
Assassin's Creed isn't out yet, however given how remarkably clumsy their making the controls and how hardcore they're ripping of the Thief/Prince of Persia series makes me not give a crap about this game.

As for when the greatest quarter was it was undoubtedly when Doom was released.

Decade

Narutard.
Actually I have to concede to this one. Thats a rent at best. I only threw it in there cause I saw the previews looked pretty impressive and it was a game I wanted to try.

But hey, can't fight it, it's just not a great game.

But, Mass Effect already went gold, so unless its shipping issues, I cant see it getting delayed again.

Also, what other games were released during the same quarter as Doom?

Why does it matter?

But since you asked:
1993 In Video Gaming (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1993_in_video_gaming)
* Microprose releases the Strategy Game of the Year Master of Orion and the runner-up Master of Magic.[1]
* Namco releases Super World Stadium '93, Emeraldia, Nettou! Gekitou! Quiztou!!, Numan Athletics, Ridge Racer, Great Sluggers '93, Final Lap R, Cyber Sled and Tinkle Pit.
* August — Nintendo releases The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening (Game Boy), which becomes the best-selling handheld game in the series.
* August: Infocom and Activision release Return to Zork.
* September 24 — Broderbund releases the Myst computer game, which goes on to become one of the bestselling games of all time.
* December 10 — id Software releases Doom, a seminal first-person shooter that advanced 3D graphics for computer games.
* Nintendo releases the game Star Fox for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, the first game to use the Super FX Chip.
* Sega releases the Virtua Fighter (by AM2) arcade game, which is later displayed at the Smithsonian Institution.
* Stellar Crisis is released, making it the first free multi-player wargame that is entirely browser based.
* Squaresoft releases Secret of Mana for the SNES, the second in a series of role-playing games(the first technically being Final Fantasy Adventure for the GameBoy in 1991).
* Nintendo releases Kirby's Adventure, the second Kirby game and the only one for the NES.
* Nintendo releases the game Super Mario All-Stars for the Super NES. It features the first 3 Super Mario Bros. games together on one. Also, it's the first time the Japan version of Super Mario Bros 2 is playable in North America.
* March 15 — Sunsoft releases Blaster Master 2 for the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis.
* Maxis releases SimCity 2000, sequel to the tremendously popular SimCity.

Simcity 2000
Doom
Myst
Master Of Orion
Super Mario All-Stars
Virtua Fighter

Yeah, kinda makes your list a little weak in comparison.

In any case, its news to me that you can survive nukes and hits from an rpg in CoD. I actually wasn't even aware there were nukes in general in the game.

Well, I was referring to the tactic USA uses to protect it's civilians from nukes. Also I was talking about general not immediately fatal rpg wounds, not direct hits. But anyway, walls that aren't bulletproof protect from rpg hits in cod4 demo.

But really, if that type of thing is a problem, turn up the difficulty; you get stuck in the crossfire, you're dead.

Happens in all games and isn't really a fix to the unlimited refills problem.

I for one think that in single player games the "duck and cover" health recovery is more fun and forces you to play a bit more tactically as opposed to picking up health packs. (duck and cover as opposed to run and gun)
Actually I think that ducking and covering for health just encourages running and gunning as there is no shortage of "cover" at least in the demo. At least health packs "forced" you to avoid taking too much damage in a single part of a game.

You probably hit the nail on the head when you said "get stuck in those situations where your game saved, you have 10 health, and its impossible to move on". It is clearly meant to make that "problem" go away so casual frat boy gamers don't find the game too hard.

Edit: Decade, add secret of mana to Beowulf's list and then your list has a powerlevel of less than -9000!

Everyone get Assassin's Creed, the game is fucking amazing, anyone who said anything bad about it is now gay in my opinion. It's just so damn cool, the fighting controls are quite simple but very effective, it's got such a fun factor to cutting enemies up that it's great to just run into a huge group of guards and rip them apart, counters playing a huge part in successful fights so you need pretty good timing. But yeah, I love this game as much as bioshock. It's kinda like Tenchu z except 500x cooler.

Just read on IGN:

http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/835/835896p1.html

November 16, 2007 - If you buy an Xbox 360 before Dec. 21, Microsoft will send you a free copy of Halo 3, the company announced today.

According to the official Xbox web site, gamers who buy a new console between now and the deadline, sign up for a new Xbox Live account and register their systems with Microsoft will receive a copy of Halo 3 in their mailboxes.

The game will arrive by Jan. 18, Microsoft said.

The deal isn't combinable with other Microsoft offers or rebates and is limited to one submission per person.

Hear that? That's the sound of a million holiday wish lists exploding.

Update: This morning, Xbox.com was advertising this initiative on its Halo 3 Deals & Promotions page. By this afternoon, however, the page was gone. This link to the promotion's registration page still works, though. We've contacted Microsoft for clarification on the deal, and we'll let you know more as soon as possible.

If its still running, thats kinda cool.

Except I wish I knew this back in September. :bored:

Donno really what diffrence it would make, but at least now the whole account system EA has is compleately fucked up. My friend forgot hes password after a format/reinstall of the OS. I had to use hours to figure out what damn site, with what account names i can log into. The finnish tech support couldnt do shit (which was pretty amusing to have a tech support that have no power to change anything recarding accounts.). EA online tech support wants you to sign in to be able to use tech support (donno how you can sign in when the problem is a missing password). Also he couldnt just make a new account since the game was registered to the old one :duh: One problem was that i had to sing in using an english site, but every EA site kept redirecting to a finnish site, which made it all much more difficult. After all the investigation, EA had changed the way people login without notifying (or having the ability to renew the account on the finnish sites) :bang: Also all the statistics in C&C3 online doesnt work, neither for me or for my friend. But apart from those and few server crashes havent had that much difficulties.

UFO: Extraterrestrials (old X-COM fans should know about it)
X-COM fucking rocked. Greatest tactical squad game ever. Period.

Any gamers know that this fall has been host to possibly the greatest videogame line up in history. Anybody want to list their favorites from this year?

Just going with the 360 for me:

Halo 3
Half Life 2 The Orange Box
Naruto Rise of a Ninja
Mass Effect
Call of Duty 4
Assassins Creed

Just got my new 360 shipped from America! My old bit the RRoD dust and I voided warranty, so here is #2! Got Halo 3 waiting for me, and CoD4 should be here Monday!

My friend bought it and he likes it. have you downloaded the one player demo. I played the demo and it was fun. Far better

Buy computer version, becuause FPS games are horrible on x-box 360 and PS 3. The servers are too slow. You really need a keyboard and mouse for FPS to get the most out of the game. Also computer version has better graphics and runs more smoothly, if you have a good computer.

MP2 was a whorey abomination of the greatness that was MP1.

It has excellent graphics that run on my 32mb Video it`s fun to play and the story doesn`t suck too much. The voice acting is horrible but I skip the graphic novels anyway. It could have been longer but then again with the different types of games it`s fun to replay.... The AI is good or at least better than anything else that I`ve seen and the general design and music are cool too except for the warehouse and the last level in the mansion which suck.

There you have it. I guess you are right to compare it to the first one. Then again I`ve never played the original so I can`t say.

Do yourself the favor, it's 1000% better then that shitty sequel. They destroyed all the original characters, made bullet-time goddamn near worthless, changed Max to make him look all buff and manly, and somehow freed him from prison after he haplessly murdered dozens of people in a blaze of vigilante justice in the original.

There was never meant to be a sequel and Rockstar was just out to grub more money.

Got to say that now that i have played cod4 a bit more, it sucks even harder! Using respawn as a way to add "challenge" into the game is an idea that should have died with the 90s, but cod4 is fucking full of scripted respawn so that the game is about triggering respawn disablers and save ponits instead of cleaning the way of enemies. Otherwise the game is a good shooter, but the horrible respawn is horrible.

Looking through wikipedia. . .there weren't really any good quarters. :blank:

It seems that classic games come once a quarter, at best.

Just because someone's trailer trash doesn't always mean they live in a trailer. Sometimes they live in apartment buildings.

o it's a "you can take a man away from the trailer park, but you can't take the trailer park out of a man"-type of thing?
