I left yesterday morining to head to Dallas, but it was futile because traffic made the highways into parking lots. After sitting in the same spot for just under 2 hours, I decided to head home. It took 10 minutes. So i'm here now waiting for the storm to hit. My house is boarded up and water is plentyful. Right now its calm but the wind is gradually increasing. There are moments where the wind pushes you back just a little bit but nothing too bad. If I manage to take pix i'll post them up so stay tuned...
and yes, there is some looting in parts of North Houston.

My sister and her husband left at 5 in the AM and are still in traffic. I can only hope the hurricane comes upon them and destroys only their vehicle, and only them, the cats and dog are too nice to deserve death... at this point.

let's hope that rita just blows by and the whole advanced evacuation is just the government's way to trying to make up for their dismal failure before, during and after Katrina.
good luck man.

This doesn't make any sense. How did the Texas state government fail miserably during Katrina? Texas didn't even get hit did it? And isn't this a miserable failure? Mass hysteria and panic is never a good thing as far as I know.

I think nice gaijin's talking about the Federal Government and the fact that at the State level here (in Texas) they don't want to screw it up like their Louisiana counterparts. So they're trying to be safe, rather than sorry...even though people are breaking down on the road and a bus full of people trying to get away from the hurricane exploded on the road, and there's mass panic in general.
I really hope that this storm just dies out before it hits the coast. My aunt and uncle decided not to evacuate either because of the traffic (which is insane up here in Dallas!).
I have to say, it's kinda eerie looking out the window and seeing the clouds rolling in, knowing that they're from this massive storm that could cuase a lot of damage...

Well that makes more sense, but it still doesn't really. I mean the Fed's didn't do anything wrong last time.
Yep been hearing the same story. Houston is going to flood. :( Well see what happens but this won't be pretty. Good luck!

The Feds didn't really do anything wrong before Katrina, that was more after. They were slow to jump in, partly because the State officials in Louisiana didn't really heed the warnings in the first place. They didn't follow anything from their evacuation protocal. That's what screwed it up.
And again...these clouds are just...eerie...the wind is picking up now too and I'm not even close to the coast :( .

I wish you all those in the Rita's path good luck. I've had experience with typhoons, their only fun when there is no flood and in a concrete house. Please let us know that you all make it through the storm safely.

You do realize that it falls to state and local governments to do things first and after a certain period of time THEN the feds can move in. The Feds had to wait a certain amount of time or else they risked getting rebuked by crazy facist liberals who say that they don't do anything when they're supposed to wait and when they rush to do something important that they're being dictators and violating constitution. It's a fucked up world we live in, they are kinda caught between a rock and a hard place. I hope you guys make it through this, especially you shamu, from what I hear you are quite the sexiness incarnate.

Wow you are very misinformed about that. But with statements such as facist liberals I don't see the point in pointing you in the right direction. Im sure those crazy facist liberals didn't want the federal government to help people. Yep.
