Anyone else here watch family guy? do they have american tv shows like this and American Dad in japan?

The older episodes are almost funny. The new ones try way to hard and fail....badly. Nothing but crappy puns, painfully obvious situational comedy, and recycled crap.
Good for watching the older episodes once, but not good enough to bother with reruns.

I've really grown tired of the show. I can only see the same ten episodes so many times, after all. Plus it doesn't help that the new ones have been pretty terrible.
American Dad has been absolutely owning Family Guy (as far as quality) goes since week two.

Family Guy's takes itself too seriously. They tried to make their basic jokes on flashbacks, but fail immediately.
"I remember my part-time job as a co-worker for a Dominatrix!"
*goes to flashback*
"Uh, m'am, does this HAVE to go up my ass?"
Failed. They spoil the joke, AND try to repent their mistake by having TEN of them a day.
American Dad is making a name for itself, so I'm going with them now.

I dislike American Dad, but i'll still watch it. i think Family Guy may have jumped the shark finally (it seems the new episodes involve them just recycling characters from the earlier seasons, which tends to detract from the more absurdist humor)

the reason that american dad is taking over FG is because 4 of the key writers from FG went over to AD full time. the movie is bloody hillarious tho. Ollie is DEFINATLY my fav character. greased-up-deaf-guy is pretty funny too. If AD really does take over FG, then i think those forums will change to hosting AD, but FG still has a hugely high following. Much greater than AD.

Family Guy's getting less more hilarious the fact that they take itself too seriously, and their jokes get less funnier, and more derogatory.
"OK, guys, what would you want to be: Black, or a paraplegic?"

Stewie's the best throughout Family Guy, going from a Psychopathic Matricide, to a complete jerk, then to a raging homosexual.
Now, Seth MacFarlane has taken his homosexuality too far.
The movie was alright, but the first part seem too slow. Irate (yes, IRATE) it 7/10, having the fact that bleeps can act as the funny factor. I almost got in trouble when my brother heard "FUCK yeaaaah!" from Lois when she was drunk. And Chris' Future slut-wife pulled things too far.

What do we learn from this thread?
That Japanese Fanbois and their female counterparts have vastly different senses of humour than the rest of society due to their over-exposure to internet humour such as YTMND and SA?
The possibilities are endless.

I never really saw the appeal. I guess I sorta liked it (prior to Fox bringing it back), but after Fox brought it back, I stopped liking it all together. I tried watching the older episodes on Adult Swim, but I wasn't interested. I saw them plenty of times and it's just... oh I dunno, stale... God I hate TV now. Well, at least it's falling far form the tree. It's making a name for itself, at least it doesn't simplify its good jokes using endless flashbacks and all.
Family Guy, New Season, Problems:
-Too many flashbacks
-they give in too much with flashbacks
-the flashbacks AREN'T funny
-the flashbacks take over the entire episode, and the story-line doesn't even get to it's conclusion
-jokes may get on a tad too far ("what do you want to be: Black, or crippled?")
-Stewie's matricidal self is dieing, his raging homosexuality is growing (don't want to be homophobic or anything, but it's killing my interest within Stewie)

Vocb, I agree. Last episode, what was with the caveman skit, that wasn't funny, that went on for five minutes? What were they thinking? I miss the days when they did flashbacks that were short, sweet, and clever. Example: The one where Peter mentions writing the TV station to keep Coach on the air. The white out got knocked over and made it look like the note said "If you cancel Coach I will kill Craig T. Nelson." He then shows up to the door, hands Peter a gun and tells him "Make it quick, will you?" :)
One other thing, from what I've seen they've pretty much ditched gay Stewie. After pretty much getting rid of Lois-hating Stewie, mad-scientist Stewie, and world conquerer Stewie, they seem to be floundering to make him funny with all of his most important characteristics gone. They seem to be stuck with having him do "jokes" where he talks on. And on. And on. Like where he kept asking Brian about his book-writing, in the episode where Brian gets on the Bachelor.

That is all true, man. The Family Guy movie, though, was a little bit of an upset, but it did bring back Stewie's hatred and egotistical personality! I shed a tear of happiness when he screamed, "She's STILL alive..? WHAT THE HELL, MAN!!!" :D

I thought Lois-killing Stewie and world-domination Stewie were just so boring. Personally, I think he much funnier when he's sexually confused and jokes around awkwardly. The season premier had Stewie at his funniest.
"Garfield at Large," by Jim Davis. Now as you can see in this panel, Garfield doesn't care for Nermal, but like it or not, Nermal's here to stay! Or is he? Let's read on...
Hey look at that Yosemite Sam mudflap. You'd better stay back Brian! And the noise he makes right at this point is priceless.
I actually thought the caveman skit was pretty funny. However, the really long chicken fight in one of the other episodes was just way too much.
Another thing from the new episodes that was great was the flashback of Peter when he was on ecstacy.
Ooh, Brian, your ears are like dog ears!...Stewie! Your head is soooo smooth! How...how ya doin' that?

That eipsode was PURE GENIUS. It acutally grabs the viewers' attention and shows how they can relate stuff without acutally telling what it means!
I mean, Family Guy goes "I remember the time where I almost committed suicide in the taj mahal!" and it goes somewhat...
*Hindu Music in the background, Peter taking out a knife preparing to stab himself, Indiana Jones comes jumping through a glass window saying "NOOOOOOOOOO!"*
Well, something like that.
What I meant was, Family Guy spoils the flashback jokes, and try repenting it's mistake by trying to make us laugh at countless numbers of them. :(

American Dad really isn't that funny to me. There are moments where I chuckle, but it usually involves sitting through too much crap to be worth it. And besides, it feels like they took all the characters from Family Guy and just remade them but not as funny. The dad is a combination of Peter, stewie, and the guy in the wheel chair, the fish is quagmire, the alien is cleveland, and the kid is the two kids. I mean couldn't they do any better than that? It's even the SAME jokes? sigh...
And family guy hasn't been as funny either, they are trying way too hard.

There's the problem with people disliking American Dad, they compare it to Family Guy thinking it's hilarity value will be the same. That's what everybody says. One tells me "It's not as funny as Family Guy," not because "they made fun of my country" (kudos to the Iranian-terrorist-stereotype episode).
It's only funny because the jokes seem more likely for "mature" people, since every joke seems to have some connection to politics and all.
"Secret Whitehouse Bunker...? Secret Halla Hurton [sp?!] Bunker..? SATAN?! This must be Dick Cheney's Blackberry!"
--Steve Smith, American Dad, Episode 201
I mean, not even a stupid Junior highschool kid would get that joke, since they're too busy smoking pot and doing drugs trying to fit in with the wrong crowd. :D
The same goes for Family Guy, Seth MacFarlane says the viewers aimed for Family Guy are ages 20+, judging from the vast amounts of pop-culture 80's reference and all. Now that we've got highschoolers talking about how Family Guy was hilarious when Stewie talking on his Playphone saying "Grover--GROVER! GROVER!! HA-HANG O-ON, GROVER! H-HA-HANG ON!!", there's no telling when there shall be an end for this wierd taste of hilarity-value.
That part wasn't even funny.
And family guy hasn't been as funny either, they are trying way too hard.
I agree with that idea. Probably that's the main reason we have to watch ten flashbacks a day.
My Theory: People like Family Guy over American Dad because they mix in random humour with stupidity (Peter licking his nipple, Stewie playing the banjo), whilst American Dad takes stuff in a more serious political (and practical) sort of way.

Actually I was hoping for American Dad to be different from family guy, and it actually seems very similar. I also find the characters in that one much more annoying than family guy.
I guess the problem with American Dad, I can use the part about the blackberry to show my point. The part where they found the blackberry was fine, amusing, but then what they did with it for the rest of the episode was predictable and stupid. I mean, I could have guessed they were going to be emailing country leaders and pulling pranks taking on situations and stereotypes that are horribly overplayed anyway. It could have been funny if they had taken a different, unexpected direction.

Actually I was hoping for American Dad to be different from family guy, and it actually seems very similar.
Only because you're comparing American Dad to Family Guy animation-wise. Just because Stan Smith looks like a carbon-copy combination of Quagmire and Joe doesn't justify the fact that it's an unoriginal show.
I also find the characters in that one much more annoying than family guy.
The old pedophilic geezer from Family Guy is really annoying. It was hilarious and all when he first perved up on Chris before he moved to the South, but seeing that Seth MacFarlane pulled a Simpson's, and brought him back without notice, doesn't bring back the good humour within him.
The part where they found the blackberry was fine, amusing, but then what they did with it for the rest of the episode was predictable and stupid.
There was more to that show, the part where Stan's Daughter gets it on with Stan's Boss, Bullock (kudos to Patrick Stewart in being a funny voice-cast), which was more hilarious than that.
Focusing on the Blackberry part as bad humour doesn't cut it, buddy. :D
I mean, I could have guessed they were going to be emailing country leaders and pulling pranks taking on situations and stereotypes that are horribly overplayed anyway. It could have been funny if they had taken a different, unexpected direction.
They did.
What they did apart from Family Guy was, they amped up the hilarity-value to a mature feeling, eliminated almost all flashbacks, and focused more on the plot-line, aside from what Family Guy's doing.
The only problem with that is, the kids watching Family Guy will think American Dad is just a stupid show with characters similar to Family Guy. That is basically my pet peeve, idiots who think American Dad is just a tasteless spin-off/Family Guy is way funnier than American Dad without bothering to watch it first (or, they wouldn't even get the jokes anyway).
American Dad does has it's moments. Like when the dad goes to the sci-fi convention and utters this great line:
Oh my god, who's running the internet?!
That should be quoted for truth. :D

I think that Season 5 is quite good so far. The caveman scene was amazing, longer than most flashbacks but not as long as the chicken fight which started to get irksome.

Jumped the shark gets overused, and used incorrectly.
Jump the shark is meant to mean that the show has gone bad/run out of steam, so it's become reliant on cheap stuntsto try to keep it going. Happy Days ran out of good stories when the put in cheap stunts like Fonzie jumping over a tank of sharks with his motorscycle. To my knowledge, Family Guy hasn't gone in the direction of such things, it's just gone bad.
Jumped the shark is used when a show starts to become a parody of itself, I know the origin and Fonzie was actually waterskiing over the shark, not on a motorbike.

Well, I agree that having one character as a carbon copy of the original show doesn't hurt originality too much, but EVERY character in the family comes almost directly from a character in the original show. Hell, the basic idea of the shows are EXACTLY the same: totally dysfunctional family gets into messed up situations and random shit happens. It's not about how they present it; I don't care if they are flashbacks or present time story plots. And overall that doesn't make it a bad show.
To me it is more about the humor. The world is fucked up enough and I don't want to see terribly cynical jokes (that sometimes ring far too true) about the political state of the country and world. I want to relax and forget about things and laugh without having to read the news and other depressing political things to understand the jokes. So couple the fact that they shows ARE very similar and I don't care as much for the humor, you get a show just don't like as much.
PS I *really* hate it when people rip apart posts like that. It makes it feel like a personal attack on what was written, or that what was written was taken like a personal attack. I somehow have a tendency for liking Oldies as you do, Daishikaze. All these people liking these new episodes has made me ill the fact they don't realize how good the olden days were. :D
Best episode in my opinion was the first William Shatner appearance in Season 1 :D
