ah, but if I have 100 American dollars, I can get 115 Aussie dollars, and 134 New Zealand dollars. Today, at least.

I'm totally screwed. I'm paying my daughter's tuition in British pounds (ridiculously strong at the moment) from my salary in yen (rather weak at the moment). Suddenly university is very, very expensive.

Meh. The economy bigwigs can say what they want, but the Canadian dollar has lived in harmony with the American dollar for decades up in certain parts of Minnesota. :D

Yeah, but the was just Minnesota. Now we ALL suffer their fate...

But seriously, this is huge. If we slide even a tiny bit more or there's a hiccup somewhere, our credit rating will drop a notch or two. That's all it will take to change the world's trading currency to Euros.
Our domination of the world's currency and exchange market as well as trading(oil and so on) in dollars results in U.S. currency having an artificially inflated value. I've read that 40% of our value is because of this, as well as more than half of our political leverage. If that all goes, we'll be on the outside looking in, regardless of what our leaders decide.
A big military and a lot of yelling won't matter when China and other countries win and kick us out of everyplace on the planet merely by using the decades of market penetration for our products and companies that we've put into place in third world countries(often by force) - to just buy it all. In essence, we did the hard work and they just wrote a check.
I give us 10 years. Maybe 15, tops. I used to think that it was 20-30, but the money that we are wasting overseas right now that we should be using to help our economy is making it much worse.
Oh, and China is already outsourcing its own materials in Africa and other places in anticipation for our collapse.(technically a readjustment to our proper economic levels sans credit and market manipulation)
Of course, the U.S. still will survive. And so will most people if they plan and save and pay off their debts beforehand.(their house as well would be good). Just it's going to be exactly like when the U.K. stopped being a major world power. Going to be a mess.
USD = CAD
Maybe my brain is tired, but do you mean American dollars are the same currency as Canadian dollars now? :boggled:

No, but the exchange rate is equal.
They aren't one and the same, but they're worth as much. The true loss here is huge. No more jokes about Canadian monies being worthless!
And Plekto, that is if the Chinese want to wait for a US collapse. How much of the debt do they own again?

I tell you what I do know about

Methinks it has something to do with the big electronic money printing presses they run non-stop at the Federal Reserve ..
Of course, the U.S. still will survive. And so will most people if they plan and save and pay off their debts beforehand.
Imho, pay off debts? That's so 20th century! The smarter way is ... hyperinflate debts away, then declare sorry... we didn't want to do that, cut 9 zeroes from currency and have a blank slate.. right? And you still get to keep the goodies you bought from abroad with money that was either made out of thin air(created out of nothing by the Reserve) and lent to you from the US, or money some foreign fool lent you..
..
deflation" began appearing in the business news, Bernanke gave a speech about deflation. In that speech, he mentioned that the government in a fiat money system owns the physical means of creating money. Control of the means of production for money implies that the government can always avoid deflation by simply issuing more money. (He referred to a statement made by Milton Friedman about using a "helicopter drop" of money into the economy to fight deflation.) Bernanke's critics have since referred to him as "Helicopter Ben" or to his "helicopter printing press". In a footnote to his speech, Bernanke noted that "people know that inflation erodes the real value of the government's debt and, therefore, that it is in the interest of the government to create some inflation."
Heh. We in Europe'll have the last laugh .. just before something like the Great Depression occurs ..

The problem is that if you print your way out of debt, eventually the whole world stops trading with you. Afterall, most of our goods are made in China now, so why not just go to China directly?
Most of everyone's goods are made in China now. :D

Upwards of $6, actually.
Huh? I checked one of those converter sites before and its $2.02 to the pound. Where I live (Liverpool) it costs around £1.50 for a sound pint! :frypan:
Yeah, we get ripped off hardcore. At my local, you can get Tooheys New pints for $5 when they're running the special.
