I must admit that I have never seen cosplay, but honestly! If you are so in love with something to the point that you wish to mimic it then wouldnt you also fear making a mockery of it?

Oh, come on, cosplay is fun. =3
It's like Halloween, only you don't have to wait until October 31st. And there are good American cosplayers out there, just like there are bad Japanese cosplayers out there. This person just went out of their way to find the best from one and the worst from the other. And most of the Japanese versions they picked are "better" simply because the person under the costume is better-looking. Like that first one they picked of Cloud. The Japanese photo is cooler and the person pictured is prettier, but the American guy's costume is actually way more accurate. Or like the Yuna one. The two costumes are almost exactly the same, but the cosplayers have different figures, is all.
p.s., I've never actually taken the trouble to cosplay, but I still think it looks fun. Halloween is my favorite holiday, mostly because I get to wear a costume.
I thought the Rikku and Sailor Moon ones weren't that bad, actually.
The trouble is if you want to cosplay anything, you should be thin, and if male, have that feminine Japanese boy look.

if male, have that feminine Japanese boy look.
Why? That's a horrible look. And even then you're not going to look that much more like an anime character than a normal Japanese guy or a white guy. Especially if the actual character doesn't have that feminine Japanese boy look.

To be honest I cant say that I can fully understand coming from Australia. I suppose if I had fond childhood memories about dressing up like that then yeah i suppose.
Halloween when I was growing up was a novelty of American culture. My family are Scottish and therefore would celebrate Halloween, but it was a far more sedate event compared to the US.

You never had a dress up as a character day in vce? I can understand the fun of it. It's only fun if EVERYONE does it and it's at the right place. Otherwise a little creepy. Half ass costumes just don't work. If you're going to do it, you gotta do it properly.
For example, in year 12 we had Z day. So I came as zorro, my sword was a metal coat hanger and time capsule lid. My cape was some black thing I ripped up and my mask was a black cutout with some string. It looked pox but it was fun, + I could wip people with the sword

OH gawd!!! Nothing has made me crack up more from the net in a long time! That was so awesome!
On a more serious note, Obviously there are incredibly talented American cosplayers and that guy chose the worst of the crop to make fun of so I don't think that "japanese cosplayers are great while american cosplayers are horrible" is true at all. The thing is, I think in Japan people only bother cosplaying if they have a good costume. In America, many just don't care if their costume is good or not. I like that attitude better personally. It's better to try something and suck rather than not do it at all. I mean, all the fat girls in the stupid outfits are ugly, but I think that it's great that they tried to do it cause they're into it.

I don't know. i kind of agree and kind of disagree. I would say that doing anything half-assed is bad and you might as well not do it. Things like school projects, any work, etc.
But really, doing a cosplay is something fun. Sometimes you really just don't have the resources to do a good cosplay. I think it's alright for cosplay to be half-assed, because you're showing your dedication to the con/show/manga.
I know you could say "if you showed real dedication, you would make a good costume" but really, a lot of the time you just don't have the time/resources/talent to do something like that. So in that case, I think it's alright to TRY to make a costume. You can use it for practice and if you keep trying, you can get better. I really think it's better than just a few people making great costumes, honestly, because in American cons you see lots of people with beautiful costumes that they commissioned or made themselves, and some not-so great-looking ones, I think though, that it's really better to try it and make a fool of yourself and have fun with it than not.

I dont get the whole "shouldn't cosplay" sentiment. If you're not at the con, you probably will never see them, so why does it matter to you how someone you dont know and will never meet dresses.
Someone is having fun how they want. It hurts no one, so why is this a bad thing.

Well, GOOD Cosplay/Dressing up is possible, of course, since it's what they do on TV and in movies all the time. But it requires silly amounts of time and or money. Nobody derides a Klingon in a Star Trek movie for looking lame, for instance. (acting is another matter...) And nobody flinched at the look of well, ANYONE in the Lord of the Rings series.
It's this half-baked stuff that gives it a bad name, and in the U.S., it's REALLY half-baked. Okay, more like done in an old Easy-Bake Oven. Fun to laugh at, though.
So if you're going to do it, do it correctly. Yes, this means learning how to deal with prosthetics and all of the rest like they do for makeup and such in Hollywood. That's the basics. Then move on from there.
Btw:
My favorite so far of the ones posted here is that Gundam made out of cardboard boxes with "Gundam" scrawled on it with a Sharpie. :)

I had a conversation like this with a friend a couple weeks ago (She cosplays, I don't.) We both agree that if you're going to cosplay you have to put some type of effort in it. As well as effort, it's also wise to pick a charecter that you can fit... My friend cosplayed Zelda without a wig. She isn't pale nor has blonde hair, yet the older version of Zelda fit her so she cosplayed that version (Which she likes better anyways). The thing is, I couldn't imagine her playing blonde-hair pale skin Zelda. I'd say fitting the charecter is just as important as a decent outfit.
Sorry, but I twich when I see insanely bad cosplay. It doesn't take much more effort to have decent cosplay, as I've seen people go into their closet and mix and match and come out with decent looking cosplays.

Not all anime characters are skinny, like for example "Chouji" (sp) from Naruto, who is chubby to overweight.
Plus that article didn't show any bad pictures of Japanese Cosplayers or any good picture of American Cosplayers, which means it's biased.

When you dress up strangely in public and allow people to take pictures, you are pretty much telling the world to judge you.
On that note, I enjoy seeing really good cosplayers in action. The half-ass stuff I just kind of glance over, and the really bad ones I attempt to ignore to save my stomach from heaving it's contents over a 30ft blast radius. It's like those really fat girls who wear belly shirts, you can say it's ok to be fat all you want but that's just plain nasty.

I agree with City, actually.
Even if the girl cosplaying would ordinarily be hot, the fact that she's probably wapanese somehow ruins her for me. I don't mean to offend or hurt anyone's feelings that's into that stuff, it's just kind of how my mental process works. I don't find girls attractive if they're goths, emos, or nerds either, if that helps?

And an 18+ whale squeezed into a skin tight white schoolgirl outfit to cosplay a 14 year old poter child for eating disorders is pathetically funny.
I think that cosplay isn't bad... But it's something you should keep to yourself most of the time. To me, it's like if you like biology and disecting stuff. You don't really go around showing people pictures or parts from animals. Other might get grossed out by it.
Like cosplay, it's something that you should probably keep to yourself. But it's not a bad thing.

See, most people just can't do something like that. That outfit must have taken hours and hours and cost a ton of money. Of course she will be rewarded for her efforts, but normally cosplayers just don't have the resources to accomplish such a feat.
Vanilla Aoi
09-18-2007, 04:18 AM
Yeah she spend a ton of time and work on her costume. And she's actually got the body for it, which is a plus for me.
Don't most Japanese cosplayers buy their costumes anyway? A little unfair to compare something professionally tailored and something fanmade; though i've seen some fanmade stuff that just blew me away. I guess it's how much you put into it.
MNJetter
09-18-2007, 04:50 AM
It really does depend on your resources. Like Kal said, a lot of Japanese cosplayers buy their own costume, which is much, much cheaper than making one of similar calibre. People who didn't buy their own costume are usually professional cosplayers for conventions or advertising campaigns, in which case you can't really call them cosplayers (even though they get posted on the internet by people who label them as cosplayers....I'd bet almost anything that the female FFX2 characters on the OP's website are pros)
That's not to say that there aren't genuine Japanese cosplayers. They just generally don't put their photos up on the internet for everybody to see.
Most anime fans/cosplayers in the states are in high school or college, which is extremely tight for money for most people. The couple of times I went to anime conventions, I went with a friend who wanted desperately to cosplay, but her budget relegated her to mixing things from her already-existing wardrobe with things bought at Goodwill. She can get pretty creative with the seam-ripper and some scrap cloth from Wal-mart, but there's only so much you can do when you also have to use that money to feed yourself with.
Nobody says that young children should do an absolutely perfect job of making a sandcastle or a pillow fort. Why should adults have to hold to high standards when they are just playing? It's aesthetically pleasing when someone gets it right, sure, but we can't all be thousand-aires in college. :D
P.S., Masa, I love your Luffy costume!

Zelda and Gollum kick ass
Masa, I can't see half the pictures you posted. Are they dead links, or maybe it's a problem with my computer?
EDIT: nm, now I can see them. Computer just didn't feel like loading them an hour ago, I guess.

Wait till you see her teeth. Even after kissing her, your tongue would come out all tattered and bleeding.

I am in the middle of a class and I started laughing so hard at the six flags guy just now. bahahahahaha xD

What gentlemanandscholar said is correct. She has really crooked teeth.
I mean, I thought I had it bad (my bottom row is crooked, but not as bad as her)
Guys usually would hit it despite the threat of pain, but even I would be a little apprehensive about getting oral from that.. thing.
And I think she's more cute than she is hot. Cute is adorable. Hot is..well.. "That's right, in your mouth you dirty dirty girl. You know you want it, yes you do."

http://community.livejournal.com/skypirates/6050.html - look at this and tell me American's can't cosplay.
Even though Japanese do great cosplay, my problem is that they all look JAPANESE and so it tends to get boring. At least Americans have a higher chance of eye color. -_-
That guy with orange hair almost looks like a kiefer sutherland.

That's some really shallow shit. Especially for a large majority of the Ameritrash I see acting like they are some sort of "playa" in Japan. Some of those fucks should be grateful that anyone would give them a second look.

Tooth critics. I was a kid that was picked on a lot as a child, so I really hate that. All the things I was told made me ugly are what actually make me beautiful. I'll take a physical flaw over a character flaw any day of the week.

Tooth critics. I was a kid that was picked on a lot as a child, so I really hate that. All the things I was told made me ugly are what actually make me beautiful. I'll take a physical flaw over a character flaw any day of the week.
That's because you're flawed. On the other hand, I'm the best parts of Gandhi, Adonis, and Einstein all mixed in one. Without any of their faults.
Yes, indeed, I'd take a physical flaw over a character flaw any day of the week, but it's really just a hypothetical because I'm perfect.

Nice pic, Masa. :)
Yeah my teeth are crud, too, but that's because they are wearing out, cracking, and so on(metal filings expand over time compared to the newer epoxy type). So eventually the teeth literally crack apart under the stress a decade or two later. Queue up a few visits for crowns and artificial teeth(single ones with titanium mounts) later and everything is fine. Well, except for your wallet at $600-$800 each AFTER insurance.
but it can be said that when our teeth get bad here in the U.S., we *do* take steps to eventually fix it.

When my adult teeth came in, everyone was worried that my teeth were going to be all crooked since my old teeth weren't coming out until the new tooth was practically completely grown in, but fortunately, my choppers came out just fine. They're not perfectly straight, but not nearly bad enough to justify braces. Fortunately, I've taken good care of my teeth and I've never needed fillings or anything.
I kid about people with bad teeth. I don't really care about teeth that much; for example, the cute one of my Japanese tutors doesn't have perfect teeth, but she still looks great, so who cares? I don't.

I have horrible teeth.
Like, 50-ish fillings and 2 root canals so far horrible.
A few years back, all of my metal fillings started to give way and leave behind these huge holes that exposed my nerves.
It wasn't fun.

Let me explain something here. Braces, whitenings, and other dental care costs MONEY. Not just a little, but a LOT. One person could easily spend more than 500,000 JPY ($4,200+) on the procedures required to have good teeth. Surprise surprise, people in big cities just so happen to have better teeth! If someone's father is a sectional manager for Xerox, they probably have good teeth. If their father tends rice fields for a living, well maybe that 500,000 is needed for other things.

You've got a definite point there. I, too, am trying to lose weight.
But my student the dentist was talking about how Japanese jaws are getting smaller, but their actual teeth are still very large, which causes the crowding. The crowding and crooked placement cause increased risk of plaque, decay and pain. Then he held a bunch of bananas in front of his mouth and I nearly died.
What gets me is how many people I see with scaling and plaque, yellow and brown, all over their teeth. How many children I have taught whose teeth were black all the way around, rotting out of their mouths from snacks, as well as eating rice and not brushing the film off their teeth.
Dental hygiene is lacking for many people here, and that cannot be denied.

This should be the final proof that half-assing a costume is very, very bad and no one should ever do it, because you just make an ass out of yourself. I've regretted the day I cosplayed ever since.

Spoken like someone who has never had to deal with weight problems.
I'm not even that heavy, but I have been between 5 and 30 lbs overweight for my height and bone structure since high school. I used to play sports year-round. I have tried diet. I have tried exercise. I have tried both at once. I have tried various fad diets and fasting regimens. I have tried pretty much everything in the book, except for extreme measures like liposuction or stomach-stapling, or things dangerous to your health, like vomiting or diet pills. And nothing works.
My mom is also overweight, as are three or four of my good friends. None of them are lazy, that I know of. Not all of them try as persistantly as me to lose weight, but none of them are your stereotype of lazy, overeating pigs. I'm sure they exist, but I would hesitate before I said that it could describe "most" overweight people. Most overweight people, in my opinion, act about the same as underweight people. They just don't have the metabolism to cope with today's world of monster proportions and fat-filled prepared foods, even if they only eat the same amount as someone who is in the normal weight range.
</rant>
I also agree that cosplaying isn't cool. But most cosplayers are the kind of people who have never been considered "cool" in their life, so by the time they reach high school or college, they don't care whether anything they do is cool or not. And I actually respect that. It's better than getting caught in a world where if you do something uncool, you get looked down on by people who don't know anything about it other than it's supposed to be uncool.

Word to MNJ and Roxie.
Being fat has something to do with the amount of effort you put into dieting, but really, it's a lot easier for some than others. I must admit that my laziness has to do with me being overweight, however one of my best friends has been overweight her whole life and its always been a struggle for her. She's the smallest she's been in a long time, however she still is overweight. It's especially hard when you're 5'4 like her.
Masa, when you get older and earn tons of money, you can afford to fix your teeth : ). It's never too late to get braces! I had them when I was a kid for a long time. I'm very grateful to my parents. I first got them when my parents weren't so well off, but I was an only child and somehow they managed. Braces felt like hell at the time with my teeth hurting all the time and them causing sores in my mouth, but now it's worth it cause my teeth are very straight.

This is true. My father has had weight issues all his life, he tried weight watchers, etc. It took him the combination of cycling absolutely everyday; to and from work (7 miles one way) plus the diet of a small bird to finally lose weight.
For some people it just takes a lot of effort to maintain a nice figure, depending on your metabolism.
That's not to say it's an excuse. Whether you have a fast or slow metabolism, it's your responsibility to yourself to stay at a healthy weight.

Good for you. It doesn't mean that anyone who doesn't work equally hard is lazy. It just means that you are an exceptionally hard worker.
When I was in college, I lost 30 pounds while recovering from major back surgery. And I also, having to deal with a slow metabolism, had to work incredibly hard for it. But I am well aware that if I didn't go that extra mile, it wouldn't make me lazy. It would be me making the exact same effort as people who don't have to deal with that kind of stuff.
If someone has a really hard time losing weight, it doesn't make them lazy if they don't succeed. It's not results that determine laziness, it's effort, and most skinny people I know don't work any harder to stay that way than most fat people I know.
Perhaps most fat people are lazy, by your definition. But if we're going to go by what apparently is your definition of lazy, I would contend that most skinny people are equally lazy.
P.S. My parents are both overweight, too. And they, like me, have tried every trick in the book to lose weight, with no permanent success. And they both are otherwise very healthy people with very healthy lifestyles.

Some skinny people don't need to work to look how they want to look.
That doesn't determine if they are lazy or not - if they have no need to work to reach those specific goals, then I'd say what determines their laziness is the effort put toward attaining things that are their goals.
If someone is overweight and being in shape is their goal, then that person can't compare their effort with a skinny person's to lose weight or be in shape if that skinny person doesn't care about that goal.
It would be more appropriate to compare the effort of someone else with the same goals as yourself to determine how lazy you are.
If you are trying to lose weight, determine your laziness by comparing to those who have been successful in making the actual same change you want to make. (If it's dropping 10 pounds, compare to someone who is successfully dropping that same weight/has done that. If it's dropping 1-200 pounds, compare yourself to a successful competitor on the biggest loser. Don't compare yourself to someone who has already met that goal and moved on to other goals, or never had to have that goal in the 1st place).
Roxie

If you are trying to lose weight, determine your laziness by comparing to those who have been successful in making the actual same change you want to make.
Where do you stop the comparison? If I want to lose 10 lbs, I can't properly compare myself to someone with a super-fast metabolism who has succeeded in losing 10 lbs. They could sleep it off while I spend 30 hours a week in the gym, and I would still lose less weight. Do you have to compare metabolisms? Stress levels? Number of kids? Age? There are a whole lot of factors that go into how easily you can lose weight.
My point was simply that most overweight people are not lazy. Not in a relative sense. In a "compared to humanity as a whole" sense. Let's not complicate things more than they need to be.

Oh well, win some lose some
On the fat people, skinny people and bad teeth thing
Fat People things: Some people grow out of it, some people stay with it...whatever the case is, as long as you're trying to keep yourself from having a heart attack and having horrible health problems then I think you're doing the right thing whether you're big or small.
My story is, from about 12 - 16, I discovered the joys of eating, being lazy and stuff and I was your exact representation of someone who was fat by choice. The summer of 16 when I was turning 17, I started going to the gym and working out and amazingly my metabolism shot through the rough. My basic day consisted of going to the Gym in the morning, coming home and either eating my mom's cooking or going to the awesome Korean joint down the street, then going to work or just coming home and literally sleeping ALLLLLLLL the rest of the day. If I wasn't sleeping I was on my computer or gaming. Now, granted when my senior year of high school kicked off and I decided I wanted to join the military, I wasn't in the gym as much but I did do a lot of push-ups, and sit-ups in my home at certain hours of the day and stuff. With my metabolism still running like a rocket, it allowed me to eat what I wanted and ...well..whatever.
Curving to current times, I'm lazier than a mutha f***a, however, I'm required by the military to keep myself physically fit, meaning that in the mornings, usually Mon, Wed and Fri, I go to the Gym, do some calisthenics then shoot off for usually a 3 ~ 4 mile run. Mostly at a pace to where I think I'm burning fat or something. My metabolism is still sorta high but I also cut down A WHOLE LOT on 1) junk food and 2) eating square meals...however, I do eat a lot of candy (peppermints) through out the day which kinda keep me awake.
Teeth: When I was little, I had the most perfect teeth, they were straight, always white and just....I had a beautiful smile. Now, my teeth aren't so great. I mean, they're not jagged edge or throwing gang signs but some of my adult teeth didn't grow in straight as much as I wanted. Also, when I was little, I discovered the joys of eating candy which eventually led to tooth decay and a lot of dental work. When I moved in with my mom at around 14, I stopped going to the dentist and now that I'm..again..in the military, I go to the dentist for regular check ups, but amazingly, my teeth are maintaining and I have picked up on flossing and all that other garbage and stuff.
Moral of my stories are, I made some crappy decisions but I do my best to turn around from them and also, all the people going "ZOMG FAT HEFFERS BAD FOR MEH EyeZQ!!1!". Well...everyone is brought up differently, comes from different back grounds and has different medical problems. Granted, in my opinion, if you wanna look a certain way, you can but you have to work at it...whether it's baby steps or drastic change (lypo). For those haters out there on big people? Once it starts..it's REALLY hard to stop and if it's got some genetic background (you've been trying your hardest to get thinner but you just can't seem to lose the pounds) I say to those people then don't worry so much about how you look but more or less if you're healthy looking the way you do. It's better to have your health and be big then to be morbidly sick all the time and look like a model.

I got one of my teeth knocked out last night, and another one is loose. Now I can join the "fucked up teeth" club! Would the mere sight of me fill you guys with disgust now?

According to the all encompassing BMI scale, I'm overweight.
Damn, now I'm really worried!

But before? And aren't you British? I kid.
But get to a dentist about the tooth - maybe it can be reseated.

Then you totally disgust me.
In all seriousness, never trust the BMI. It's never accurate. Just go by looks, or one of those MRI scans.

Haha, of course :p
But I am letting myself go. Haven't weighed myself in a while either. I should do that tomorrow.
